A small-space guide from our Portland and Cedar Mill showrooms

Furniture for small apartments in Portland

Measure the way in, not just the room. Then look for sofas under 80 inches wide, tables that grow when friends come over, and pieces that do two jobs.

The short answer

  1. Measure doorways, stairs and turns, not just the wall the sofa goes on.
  2. Look for sofas under 80 inches wide. The apartment sofas in this guide run from 56 to 76 inches.
  3. Choose pieces that do two jobs: queen sleepers from 68 inches wide, a Murphy cabinet bed, tables that extend.

Step one

Measure the way in before you fall in love.

Most sofas that don't fit are stopped at the door, the stairs or a tight turn, not in the room. Grab a tape measure and check these four spots.

  1. Doorways

Measure the opening at its narrowest point. If the sofa's depth or height is an inch or two smaller, it can usually turn through on its side.

  2. Halls and turns

Measure the hall width and any corner right inside the door. Longer sofas need room to pivot.

  3. Stairs and landings

Measure the narrowest stair width, handrails included, and the ceiling height at the turn. Landings are where sofas get stuck.

  4. Elevators

Measure the door, the inside width and depth, and the diagonal. Some sofas ride up standing on end.

  5. Tape it out

Mark the sofa's footprint on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. You'll know fast if the walkway still works.

I have stairs and tight corners; I was very worried the couch wouldn’t fit. But they consistently reassured me, and they got it into my apartment beautifully.

They have some couches that are under 35" deep which seems rare to come across these days and we love our new couch for our new tiny little apartment!

Furniture that does two jobs

A guest room that folds away.

Queen sleepers that are sofa-sized during the day, a bed that closes into a cabinet, and a sectional that comes in pieces so it climbs the stairs one module at a time.

Before ordering a sleeper, measure the open bed too: it needs clear floor in front of the sofa.

Small dining

The best dining tables for small Portland apartments.

Round tables and tables with a hidden leaf. They seat two to four every day and open up when friends come over. Leave about 36 inches behind each chair so people can get in and out.

What size sofa fits a small apartment?

The sofas in our size table are 56 to 76 inches wide and 32 to 38 deep. Measure the wall, leave room to walk past, and check the way in: doorways, stairs and turns.

Will a sofa fit through my door or up my stairs?

Compare the sofa's depth and height with your narrowest opening. If either is an inch or two smaller, it can usually turn through on its side. Stair turns and landings are the usual trouble spots. Stairs, tight hallways and other difficult access may add a delivery fee, and we confirm any extra charge before delivery. White-glove delivery adds room placement, assembly and packaging removal ($158 for a sofa or loveseat). Send us a photo and your measurements in chat and we'll help you check.

What's a good sleeper sofa for a small apartment?

Look at the closed width and the space the open bed needs. Our narrowest queen sleepers are the Luonto Erika at 68 inches and the Monika at 70 inches; the Stanton Haven is 75 inches wide and just 34 inches deep. If floor space is really tight, a Murphy cabinet bed is 64 inches wide and 26 inches deep when closed.

What's the best dining table for a small apartment?

A round table or one with a hidden leaf. The Malone is a 42 inch round that opens to a 60 inch oval, and the Alfredo goes from 47 to 63 inches. Leave about 36 inches behind each chair.
