Rug size guide: what size rug do you need?
Size the rug to the furniture, not just the room. Most living rooms take an 8' x 10', big enough for the front legs of the sofa and chairs. Then check the real size, because rug sizes are rounded.
The short answer
- Living room: an 8' x 10' for most rooms, 9' x 12' or larger to get more of the group on the rug, 5' x 8' or 6' x 9' for small rooms.
- Dining room: at least 24 inches of rug past the table on every side. An 8' x 10' for a table that seats six, 9' x 12' for eight.
- Bedroom: an 8' x 10' for a queen, 9' x 12' or 10' x 14' for a king. And read the real size: many 8' x 10' rugs measure 7'9" x 9'9".

Front legs on the rug
The sofa and chairs sit partly on the rug, so the group reads as one. Jaipur Living calls this the standard designer approach.

Every leg on the rug
All the furniture sits on the rug, with floor showing around the edges. With the sofa against a wall, that usually means pulling it a few inches out, as the 9' x 12' drawing above shows, or sizing up.

Under the coffee table
For small rooms. Accent chairs rest their front legs on the rug. Jaipur Living warns this can make a room feel smaller.

Read the real size. Rug sizes are rounded names, not measurements. Of our 15 rugs in the 8' x 10' row, 9 measure 7'9" x 9'9" and 3 measure 7'6" x 9'6". Of the 46 in the 5' x 8' row, 19 measure 5' x 7'6". Every product page lists the exact size.

Dining room
What size rug for a dining room?
Pull the chairs out before you measure. The rug should reach at least 24 inches past the table on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when someone sits down. Jaipur Living's dining room guide says 24 to 30 inches.

Jaipur Living pairs an 8' x 10' with a table that seats six, a 9' x 12' with eight and a 10' x 14' with ten. A 6' x 9' only fits a table about 24 by 60 inches this way, so most dining rooms start at 8' x 10'. Choose a flatweave or a low, dense pile; shag makes chairs hard to move and traps crumbs.
Bedroom
What size rug for a bedroom?
Run the rug sideways under the bed, starting in front of the nightstands, so at least 18 to 24 inches of rug show past the sides and foot of the bed (Jaipur Living). A queen on an 8' x 10' leaves about 30 inches at each side, as drawn. Prefer smaller rugs? Put a runner on each side of the bed instead.

Runners and round rugs
Runner and round rug sizes
A runner should cover most of a hall's length with floor showing at both ends; a round rug should reach 24 inches past a round table. On November 6, 2026 we had none of either in stock; the 35 runners and 2 round rugs in the chart can be ordered in, and each product page gives the timing.

Runners for hallways, kitchens and entries
Hallways: cover most of the hall's length, with some floor showing at both ends. The runners we can order are 2' to 3'9" wide and 5' to 16' long; the Lyra rug comes in runners from 8 to 16 feet.
Kitchens: a low-pile or washable runner in front of the sink or stove. In a galley kitchen, one runner down the middle (Jaipur Living).
Entries and bathrooms: a small accent rug or a round one. Our accent sizes run 2' x 3' to 3'6" x 5'6". Check that the door clears it when it swings.
46-in. table on a 7'10" round rug
What size round rug?
Under a round table, add 48 inches to the table's width, so a 7'10" round fits a table up to 46 inches across. Round rugs also soften corners and suit entries, breakfast nooks and small seating areas (Jaipur Living).

Measure the floor
Note doorways, vents and walls that jut out.
Pick a border
Jaipur Living's guides leave 12 inches to about 2 feet of floor. Subtract twice that from the room: a 12 by 10 foot room with a 1-foot border takes a 10' x 8' rug.
Measure the furniture
The sofa end to end, the table with the chairs pulled out, the bed's width.
Tape it out
Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.

Is a 9x12 rug actually 9 by 12 feet?
Not always. Of the 7 rugs in our 9' x 12' row on November 6, 2026, 4 measured 9' x 12', 2 measured 8'6" x 12' and 1 measured 8'6" x 11'6". The same goes for 8x10s, which are often 7'9" x 9'9". Check the size on the product page.
Should I get an 8x10 or a 9x12?
Get the 9' x 12' if your sofa is longer than about 104 inches, if you want every leg on the rug, or if your room is about 11' x 14' or larger. An 8' x 10' suits rooms around 10' x 12' and sofas up to about 104 inches with the front legs on.
What is the 18-inch rule for rugs?
It is a rule of thumb, usually about 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Jaipur Living's guides give anywhere from 12 inches to about 2 feet. In a bedroom, the same number often describes how far the rug should reach past the sides of the bed: 18 to 24 inches.
What size rug fits a 9 by 9 foot room?
With 12 to 24 inches of floor showing on every side, a rug 5 to 7 feet across: a round or square rug works well in a square room.
How much bigger than the sofa should a rug be?
At least 16 inches longer, so 8 inches of rug show past each end. A 96-inch sofa needs a rug at least 112 inches long: a 7'9" x 9'9" or 8' x 10', not a 6' x 9'.
Is it better to go too big or too small?
Too big, as long as some floor still shows. A rug that is too small can make a room feel disconnected (Jaipur Living).
Can you put a rug on carpet?
Yes. Jaipur Living recommends a pad under every rug. It keeps the rug from shifting, and on carpet it adds a layer of comfort. We carry the Cushion Grip All Surface rug pad.
