A sizing guide from our Portland and Cedar Mill showrooms

Sofa size guide: sofa, loveseat and sectional dimensions

A standard sofa is about 88 inches long and 38 deep. A loveseat is about 64 inches long, an apartment sofa about 75. Measure the wall it goes on, then every door on the way in.

The short answer

  1. Sofa: about 88 inches long, 38 deep and 36 tall, with a 23-inch-deep seat. Most of the 191 we compared are 80 to 100 inches long.
  2. Loveseat: about 64 inches long. Apartment sofa: about 75. Extra-long sofa: about 98.
  3. Measure the wall and the way in. Through a 32-inch opening, only 15 of those 191 sofas fit upright or on their backs; the rest have to be tipped, if they fit at all.

Sofa types

Loveseat vs. sofa vs. couch: what's the difference?

Sofa and couch mean the same thing, and we use both words. What changes is the size.

  • Loveseat

A sofa for two. Median 64 in.; most are 57 to 74.

  • Apartment or loft sofa

A shorter full sofa for small rooms. “Loft sofa” is Stanton's name for it. Median 75 in.; most are 70 to 80.

  • Sofa

The full-size piece. Median 88 in.; most are 80 to 100.

  • Extra-long sofa

Stanton's large, XL, extra-long and three-cushion sofas. Median 98 in.; most are 97 to 104.

Count inches, not cushions. Stanton's Ross sofa is 78 inches long with two seat cushions. The Ross loveseat is 55 inches, also with two. The names overlap too: the longest loveseats we compared (78 in.) are longer than the shortest sofas (71 in.). Go by the length.

Seat depth

Seat depth explained

Seat depth is how far you can sit back: the usable seat from its front edge to the back cushion. Overall depth adds the back cushion and frame. On Stanton's 104 sofas, overall depth is usually 15 to 19 inches more than seat depth (median 17), so two sofas with the same overall depth can sit very differently.

Seat height matters too, especially for getting up. Stanton's sofa seats sit 19 to 23 inches off the floor (median 20.5), and the arms 23 to 32 (median 26).

The deepest sofa in Stanton's line is 50 inches deep with a 32-inch seat. For every Stanton frame by seat depth, see the seat-depth chart in our Stanton furniture guide. Then sit on a few: the right depth is easier to feel than to read.

Room fit

What size sofa fits your room?

Start with the wall, not the room. Measure the length you can give the sofa after whatever needs to sit beside it: side tables, a walkway, a door swing, a vent or a radiator. Then find that length here.

  5. Up to 100 in. (8 ft 4 in.)405of 427 (95%)Nearly all of them; only the longest sofas need more
  • Tape it out

Mark the length and depth on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it. Most of the 191 sofas are 35 to 43 inches deep; a sofa with a chaise is 63 to 72 at the chaise (Stanton's 72). Then size the rug to the sofa with our rug size guide.

  • Check what's behind it

Most sofa backs are 32 to 38 inches tall, so measure up to the window sill if the sofa goes under a window.

  • Plan the open bed

The 6 sleepers on our site that post it need 84.75 to 93.75 inches from the wall when open, about 7 to 8 feet, from the Monika to the Nautica King.

Through the door

How to get a couch through a door

A sofa goes through a doorway arm first, in one of three positions. Which one works depends on your narrowest opening and three of the sofa's numbers: its depth, its height and its diagonal depth.

UprightDepth 38 in., wider than the 36-in. opening. Goes through if the depth is smaller than the opening.
On its backHeight 36 in., the same as the opening: no room. Goes through if the height is smaller.
TippedDiagonal depth 34.8 in., which clears it by 1.2 in. Goes through tipped back partway.

Drawn to scale, looking through a 36-inch opening: a sofa 38 inches deep and 36 tall with 26-inch arms, the medians, simplified to a plain shape. Real sofas vary, so measure yours.

How many of the 191 sofas we compared have a depth or height under the opening, so they can go through upright or on their backs:

10 of 191
under 30 in.
15 of 191
under 32 in.
42 of 191
under 34 in.
88 of 191
under 36 in.

At a 36-inch opening, nearly half go through upright or on their backs. At 32 inches only 15 do, and the rest have to be tipped through, if they fit at all. So measure the way in, and know the sofa's diagonal depth, before you buy.

  1. Measure the narrowest opening

Open each door all the way and measure the tightest gap, usually from the face of the open door to the stop on the other side of the frame. Then measure hallway widths, stair width, the lowest ceiling over the stairs, each turn and landing, and the elevator door and cab.

  2. Compare depth and height

If the sofa's depth is smaller than the opening, it can go through upright, arm first. If its height is smaller, tip it onto its back and carry it through arm first.

  3. Measure the diagonal depth

If both are bigger, measure the diagonal depth (below). If it is smaller than your opening, the sofa can usually go through tipped back partway, arm first.

  4. Plan the turns

Length matters at corners: a long sofa may not make a tight turn from a hallway into a door. Standing it on end can help, but only if the sofa is shorter than the doorway and ceiling are tall.

  5. Take off what comes off

Ask whether the legs come off. A door can come off its hinges too; door removal is a listed add-on in our delivery terms.

How to measure diagonal depth: a yardstick rests on the top of the back and the front edge of the arm; diagonal depth is the distance from the bottom back corner to the yardstick, at a right angle. In this drawing it is 34.8 inches.YardstickDiagonaldepth34.8 in.ArmBackBottom back corner
Side view of the same 38-by-36-inch sofa, simplified. Real backs and arms are rounder, so measure the sofa itself.

Measuring diagonal depth

Hold a yardstick against the side of the sofa so it touches the top of the back and the top front edge of the arm. Measure from the bottom back corner of the frame to the yardstick, at a right angle to it. That is the diagonal depth.

Still too big? Go smaller or go in pieces. Apartment sofas are a median 37 inches deep, and a sectional travels as separate pieces.

What are standard sofa dimensions?

There's no single standard, but the middle is clear. Across the 191 sofas we compared, the median is 88 inches long, 38 deep and 36 tall, and most are 80 to 100 inches long.

What is a loveseat, and what are standard loveseat dimensions?

A loveseat is a sofa for two. Across the 147 loveseats we compared, the median is 64 inches long, and most are 57 to 74. The 102 that post depth and height are a median 39 inches deep and 37 tall.

How deep is a couch?

Most are 35 to 43 inches deep overall, with a median of 38 across the 191 sofas we compared. Stanton's sofa seats are usually 21 to 26 inches deep. Deep-seat sofas go well past that: the deepest in Stanton's line is 50 inches deep overall.

What size sofa is best for a small living room?

Look at apartment or loft sofas: a median 75 inches long and 37 deep. A loveseat (64 in.) saves more length; a shallow sofa saves floor in front of it. Measure the wall and the way in first. See also our guide to furniture for small apartments.

Will a 40-inch-deep sofa fit through a 30-inch door?

Not upright. It can go through on its back if its height is under 30 inches, or tipped if its diagonal depth is under 30. Only 10 of the 191 sofas we compared have a depth or height under 30 inches, so measure the diagonal depth (step 3 above).

How much room does a sleeper sofa need when it's open?

Plan on 7 to 8 feet from the wall. The 6 sleepers on our site that post it need 84.75 to 93.75 inches when open. Closed, the 37 queen sleepers we compared are a median 84 inches long.

How big is a sectional?

Across the 21 sectionals we compared, the long side is a median 110 inches. The short side is 59 to 68.5 inches with a chaise end (11 of them), and 79 to 115.5 with an oversized chaise or a second seating side (10).

Is a couch the same as a sofa?

Yes. The two words name the same piece. Size is what separates a loveseat, an apartment sofa and a full sofa.

What if the sofa doesn't fit?

Where the numbers come from

The 557 sizes are 147 loveseats, 66 apartment sofas, 191 sofas, 23 extra-long sofas, 72 sofas with a chaise, 37 queen sleepers and 21 sectionals. They come from Stanton's dealer spec sheets for its current line (194 styles, pulled November 5, 2026) and the width, depth and height labeled on our product pages for Stylus, Luonto, Rowe, Four Hands, Palliser, LH Imports, Coaster and What's New (November 6, 2026). Listings without labeled measurements were left out, as were sectional sizes covering only one side and one spec-sheet entry with an impossible 53-inch seat depth. Seat depth, seat height and arm height are Stanton only, and Stylus loveseats and apartment sofas post length only. Ranges are the middle 80%, so one unusual piece doesn't stretch them. Sizes can change by fabric, cushion and configuration; check the product page or ask us before you order.
