Styling
Run the pair down the middle of a dinner table with the tall one slightly off-center and let the legs overlap a runner, or park them on a mantel with dried stems and a bowl of something dark. Black iron and unbleached beeswax is the whole palette — add nothing orange and they read as gothic rather than novelty, which is what lets them stay out past Halloween. The reason the legs are lifted rather than flat is the shadow: put a real flame in the cup on a bare wood or stone surface and the eight legs throw a second, much larger spider across the table. Low, warm light is what makes that happen, so keep the overheads off and let the tapers carry the room. On a mantel, set the large one forward and the small one back by a few inches rather than side by side, so the shadows do not overlap into a blur.
