A room can have a brand-new sofa, a consigned coffee table and a chair you have loved for years, and still feel completely connected. Give the pieces a few things in common: a comfortable scale, a related shape, a warm color, or a material that appears again across the room.
At What's New Furniture, new and consigned pieces share the same shopping trip. Our Portland and Cedar Mill showrooms make it easier to compare them in person. These seven styling ideas and three room concepts give you a starting point before you visit.
1. Choose the anchor before the accents
Pick the piece that does the biggest job. In a living room, that is often the sofa; in a dining room, it is usually the table. Decide how you want to sit, how much space you can give it, and which colors you want to live with. Then let the smaller pieces respond.
In our olive living-room concept, the new Stark Sofa in Moss Olive Green sets the palette. The consigned honey-oak coffee table brings warmth, while the caramel lounge chair makes that warmth feel deliberate. You can also reverse the process: build around a consigned table you love and choose new chairs to suit it.
2. Compare measurements, then compare visual weight
Measure the actual footprint of every piece, including an ottoman, and tape the outlines on the floor. Try the routes you use daily. Check the doorway, hall and stair turns too. A piece fitting against the wall does not establish that it will get into the room.
Our Stark is 71 inches wide, and the selected honey-oak table is 49 by 30 inches. That pairing still needs a real floor-plan check: the table's depth and the Burnside ottoman both use floor space. In the loft concept, the 84-inch Solado sofa has a solid, low profile; the clear glass table keeps the center visually open. Transparent furniture occupies physical space even when it looks light.
3. Let different pieces share a line
Compare the outlines before the labels. A curved arm can relate to a rounded chair back; a low sofa can sit comfortably with a low table. You do not need every piece to come from the same maker or decade.
The Stark's softly flared arms and buttoned back connect with the curved shell and tufted pads of the new Burnside chair. The honey-oak table adds straighter lines. In the dining concept, the consigned extension table's simple legs leave room for the new Malone chairs' sculpted arms. Consignment describes how a piece is sold; it does not establish that it is vintage or antique.
4. Connect wood tones without making them identical
Look beyond light versus dark. Compare the warm, reddish, golden or cooler cast of each finish, using the actual piece or samples in the light where it will live. Room & Board's material guidance recommends pairing woods with related undertones and repeating woods around the space.
Our bungalow concept mixes golden honey oak with darker walnut-toned legs and the Burnside's walnut shell. The warm colors connect them; the depth difference adds interest. In the dining concept, brown table wood and black chair frames make a stronger contrast. Warm-white walls and a simple neutral rug give both finishes room to stand on their own.
5. Repeat a small detail somewhere else
If one piece seems stranded, give its color or finish a second appearance. A small frame, a cushion you already own, or a ceramic bowl may be enough. Repeat the detail across the room so your eye can make the connection.
In the olive room, an earthy artwork repeats the sofa color, and terracotta pottery echoes the caramel chair. In the loft, black window frames and a restrained rug line connect with the Burnside's black base. Those accents are styling ideas, not additional products in the room bundle. Start with what you already have.
6. Give smooth and textured surfaces different jobs
A room with different furniture sources often benefits from different surfaces too. Try a woven seat beside a smooth table, or a leather sofa above a textured rug. Keep the colors connected while changing how each material catches the light.
The loft pairs the new Mahogany leather Solado with a consigned clear-glass table and the Burnside in Moss Sand upholstery. Dark, pale and transparent surfaces keep the arrangement readable. The bungalow takes another route: olive fabric, caramel leather, honey oak and the table's actual pale tile inset. That inset is a useful bridge to the light rug and walls.
7. Leave a little room around the find
Choose the piece you want to notice first, then simplify its immediate surroundings. If your consigned table has an interesting grain or inset, let some of the top show. Try removing an accessory before adding another color.
Our dining concept uses four matching new chairs around one consigned table. It gets its character from the difference between table and chairs, with space left around the group. Before buying another piece, take a doorway photo. Check whether the room has a clear focal point and whether every item earns the space it takes.
Three ways to shop the mix
Below are two living rooms and one dining room, each combining new furniture with a currently selected consignment piece. The images are AI-generated room concepts based on the exact catalog references; they are not customer homes. Product cards show standalone catalog photographs. Rugs, artwork, plants and accessories are styling only.
Consignment selection changes. The three tables selected here each had one unit recorded in current inventory when checked. If one sells, keep the brief: a warm low rectangular table for the olive room, a clear low table for the leather room, or a simple brown extension table for the dining room. Compare replacement dimensions, condition and finish before substituting. See the latest consignment furniture for current options.
Bring your room, even if it is halfway finished
Bring accurate measurements, a few room photos and photos or sizes of the furniture you are keeping to complimentary showroom design help. Our sales team can compare furniture, fabrics and finishes with you and check size and scale against the information you bring. In-home measurements, formal layouts and a larger design project belong to the separate paid interior design service.
Choose your anchor, identify two connecting details, and check the footprint. That short list makes the next new piece or consignment find much easier to evaluate.

Useful questions
Can I mix new furniture with consignment furniture?
Yes. Choose an anchor, check the actual footprints, and connect the pieces with a shared shape, wood undertone, color or material. Their purchase source does not have to match.
Is all consignment furniture vintage?
No. Consignment describes a resale arrangement, not a piece’s age. Use a specific maker or age claim only when the listing and supporting evidence establish it.
Do all my wood finishes need to match?
No. Compare their warm or cool cast, then repeat a wood tone or related color elsewhere in the room. Use actual pieces or samples rather than relying only on screen colors.
What if a consignment piece in a room concept has sold?
Keep its job in the room: approximate footprint, visual weight, shape and finish. Browse the latest consignment selection and compare a replacement in person before swapping it into your layout.
Does Shop the Room include the rugs and accessories?
Only the exact products and quantities listed in the room’s product cards are included. The generated concepts use rugs, art and accessories as styling ideas.
Can What’s New help with furniture I already own?
Bring photos, accurate measurements and sizes of the pieces you are keeping to complimentary showroom design help. The sales team can compare What’s New furniture, fabrics and finishes with those details; formal layouts and home visits are part of separate paid interior design.
