The cost to furnish a living room starts with what you need the room to do. A sofa, coffee table, and lamp can make a room usable. A separate chair creates another place to sit. A chaise sectional and chair-and-ottoman set give you two distinct places to put your feet up. Those are different purchases, even when the rooms look equally finished.
Below are three furniture budgets built from current What's New Furniture selections. The window, art, wood floor, and coffee table stay consistent so you can see where the extra spending goes. These are generated styling concepts, not customer projects. Each total covers only the listed furniture in the exact finishes and quantities shown. Rugs, art, accessories, delivery, setup, and any applicable tax are separate.
Compare the three living-room budgets
Use the current Shop the Room total for each example as your starting point. A higher total earns its place when it solves a problem you have: another seat, a different sofa footprint, or a place to stretch out. It does not automatically make the right room for you.
| Furniture plan | What is included | What the extra spending buys |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The compact essentials | Stark sofa, Remix coffee table, Waltham lamp | A working seating area with storage and light; the lowest furniture total here |
| 2. The conversation room | Alpine sofa, Zelda swivel chair, the same table and lamp | A wider sofa and an independent seat that can turn toward the conversation |
| 3. The room for staying in | Complete Drift chaise sectional, Burnside chair-and-ottoman set, the same table and lamp | A deep chaise plus a separate feet-up lounge seat |
1. Start with the compact essentials
The Stark in Dine Mustard brings the color, so the rest of this room can stay quiet. Its listed dimensions are 71 inches wide by 32 inches deep. That gives you a smaller footprint than either of the sofas in the next examples, with a bench seat and button-tufted back that make it feel intentional.
The Remix table does two jobs: a place for a cup and a home for the remotes and books. The Waltham adds light beside the sofa. Together, these three pieces create a useful room without asking you to choose every accessory at once.
The tradeoff: everyone shares the sofa. If you routinely host a friend who would prefer a separate seat, a chair may matter more than changing the sofa. And the table is nearly 49 inches long; check its footprint even beside a compact sofa. Buying smaller seating does not make every table a fit.
Make this budget smaller: keep a lamp or table you already like and replace the sofa first. Matching every piece is optional. A working lamp you own is more useful to the budget than a new lamp bought only to complete a picture.
2. Spend for a better conversation layout
The middle example replaces the Stark with an Alpine in Lush Spinach and adds a Zelda swivel chair in Rio Spinach. Both are built by Stanton in Canby, Oregon, according to their product listings. The Alpine is 80 inches wide by 35 inches deep: nine inches wider and three inches deeper than the Stark.
That is the practical upgrade. You get a different sofa footprint and a chair that lets one person face the sofa or turn toward the room. The two greens share a family of color without pretending to be the same fabric. The table and lamp remain exactly the same, making the seating change easier to compare.
The tradeoff: this is still a sofa-and-chair layout. It does not give you a chaise or an ottoman. If putting your feet up is the whole reason for buying furniture, pay attention to the next example before spending more on a separate conversation seat.
Try before deciding: compare the Alpine's loose cushions with the Stark's bench seat, and leave space for the Zelda to swivel. Call your preferred showroom first to confirm which exact models and fabrics are on the floor. Available to order does not mean available to sit on today.
3. Spend for two places to put your feet up
The upper example changes the job of the room. A complete Drift Deep Sectional in Fluffy River Rock, RHF creates the chaise seat. The Burnside in Moss Olive adds a separate lounge chair with its matching ottoman. The complete set is one selected product, not a chair with an uncounted extra.
The Drift listing gives an overall footprint of 108 inches wide by 66 inches deep. Its chaise occupies floor space that remains open in the first two plans. The Burnside ottoman also needs room in front of the chair. In exchange, two people can lounge in different seats, and the sofa area becomes the place for a long movie or a quiet afternoon.
The tradeoff: more lounging furniture means fewer layout options. Tape out the entire sectional and the chair-and-ottoman footprint before ordering. Confirm the listed RHF configuration with the team using your floor plan; the generated concept is not a delivery or orientation specification. If the chaise blocks your route through the room, the middle plan may serve you better.
Notice what this upgrade does not change: the table still provides storage, and the lamp still lights the seating area. Put extra spending into the comfort or configuration you will actually use before replacing pieces that already do their job.
Finish the budget before you finish the room
The furniture subtotal is only one line in the plan. Write down your delivery address, the pieces you are keeping, and the extra services you need before comparing your total with the amount you want to spend.
- Delivery and access: front-door drop-off, room placement, assembly, packaging removal, and old-furniture removal are separate services. Stairs and difficult access can add charges. Check the current delivery policy and confirm a quote for your address and exact order.
- Finishing pieces: budget separately for a rug and pad, art, window coverings, and accessories if you need them. The styled room images do not include those items in the furniture total.
- Timing: ordered-in and custom pieces follow their current maker lead times. An arrival estimate does not reserve a delivery date. Confirm readiness before planning around a gathering or move-in day.
- Fit: measure the room and the route into it, including doors, stair turns, and elevators. Check table reach and drawer clearance, and keep a usable walking route around the seating.
Choose the purchase that fixes your room first
If you have nowhere comfortable to sit, start with the sofa. If the sofa works but guests perch on the arm, add the independent seat. If you want a dedicated lounging room, spend on the chaise and ottoman after confirming they fit. You can build the rest around that decision over time.
Bring measurements and pictures of what you are keeping to a free initial design consultation. Full design packages are available separately. You can also compare current sofas, sectionals, and coffee tables before visiting. Start with the room that solves your everyday problem, then use its exact current total to decide what to keep, change, or buy later.

Useful questions
How much should I budget to furnish a living room?
Start with the current furniture totals in these three examples, then add the finishing pieces and services you need. The compact plan contains a sofa, coffee table, and lamp; the middle plan adds a separate chair; the upper plan includes a complete chaise sectional and chair-and-ottoman set. There is no single total that fits every room.
Do the Shop the Room totals include everything in the pictures?
No. Totals include only the exact furniture products, finishes, and quantities listed in each room. Rugs, art, books, plants, accessories, delivery, setup, and any applicable tax are separate. Images are generated styling concepts.
Is the Drift price for a whole sectional?
This example selects quantity 1 of the complete Drift Deep Sectional in Fluffy River Rock, RHF, listed at 108 by 66 by 36 inches. It is not a modular starting price. Confirm the RHF orientation and delivery route with the team before ordering.
What living-room furniture should I buy first?
Buy the piece that fixes the main problem. Start with a sofa if you need comfortable seating. Add a chair if you need an independent seat. Keep useful tables and lamps you already own, and add accessories later.
Can I try these pieces before buying?
Call your preferred Portland or Cedar Mill showroom to confirm the exact model and fabric on display. A product being available to order does not establish showroom display, stock, or immediate delivery readiness.
