Buying Used Furniture in Portland: A Local's Guide to Quality Secondhand Finds
If you're looking for used furniture in Portland, you already know the appeal: designer-quality pieces at a fraction of retail, one-of-a-kind finds with character, and the satisfaction of giving beautiful furniture a second life instead of sending it to a landfill.
At What's New Furniture, used and consignment furniture isn't a side offering — it's core to who we are. Our 25,000 sq ft showroom at 439 SE Grand Ave in Southeast Portland carries over 400 pre-owned pieces at any given time, refreshed with new arrivals every week.
What Kind of Used Furniture Do We Carry?
Our consignment team inspects and curates every piece before it hits the floor. You'll find:
- Sofas & sectionals — Pre-owned West Elm, Crate & Barrel, Room & Board, and local maker pieces. Many in excellent condition with years of life left.
- Dining tables & chairs — Solid wood sets, extension tables, and mix-and-match chairs from brands that hold their value.
- Mid-century modern furniture — Authentic vintage pieces from the 1950s-1970s alongside quality reproductions. Lane, Broyhill, Drexel, and other sought-after makers.
- Vintage dressers & credenzas — Statement storage pieces with craftsmanship you won't find in new furniture at any price.
- Accent chairs — Occasional seating, swivel chairs, and lounge chairs from designer brands.
- Coffee & side tables — Live edge, marble, glass, and solid wood options at outlet pricing.
Used Furniture vs. New: When Each Makes Sense
Used furniture is the right call when you want solid wood construction, unique character, or a specific brand at a lower price. A pre-owned Room & Board walnut dining table at $800 is objectively better furniture than a new particleboard table at $400 — you're getting higher quality materials and construction for less money.
New furniture makes more sense for upholstered pieces you plan to keep for 10+ years (custom fabric, warranty coverage), mattresses (hygiene), and kids' furniture (safety standards). At What's New, we carry both — so our team can help you decide where to invest new and where to save with used.
How Our Consignment Process Works
Every used furniture piece at What's New goes through the same process:
- Submission — Portland-area homeowners contact us to consign. We review photos and accept pieces that meet our quality and style standards.
- Inspection — We check structural integrity, upholstery condition, and overall quality. Anything with hidden damage, odors, or significant wear gets declined.
- Pricing — We price based on brand, condition, age, and current market demand. Our goal is fair pricing that moves pieces within 60-90 days.
- Display — Accepted pieces are staged in our showroom alongside new furniture, so they get the same visibility and foot traffic.
- Sale & payout — When it sells, the consignor gets paid. We handle everything.

Tips for Buying Used Furniture
- Check the frame — Sit on it, rock it, lift a corner. Solid wood frames (oak, walnut, maple) last decades. Particleboard and MDF won't survive a move.
- Smell it — Odors in upholstery are nearly impossible to remove. If it smells off in the store, it'll smell off in your home.
- Look underneath — Flip chairs and tables. Look for dovetail joints (good), manufacturer labels, and signs of repair.
- Know your dimensions — Bring a tape measure. Used furniture doesn't come with spec sheets, and "it looked smaller in the store" is the most common regret.
- Buy at a curated store, not a warehouse — The curation saves you hours of sorting through junk. Every piece at What's New has already passed our quality filter.
