Desks and display pieces change often. When you shop, measure the room and the wall first. A depth of about 24 inches suits a laptop, while 30 inches or more leaves room for a monitor. Check that drawers glide, the surface is free of deep scratches, and the piece stands steady. Display furniture such as cabinets, shelves, and etageres works best when its scale matches the objects you plan to show.
